Assemble tax source records and reconcile a review packet

Source-backed example. Practical decision guidance is proposed and untested; this is not a full implementation guide.

The problem

Tax preparation becomes harder when records span documents and entity history, leaving transactions and summary figures needing reconciliation.

Agent job

Analyze source documents, reconstruct entity history and prepare summary and profit-and-loss workpapers with human-guided cross-checks.

Expected output

A reconciled tax review packet and profit-and-loss workpaper.

Why use this

  1. A business owner preparing tax records may have overlapping statements, entity changes and transactions that appear in several documents. A balanced-looking summary can still double-count an item or assign it to the wrong entity or period.

  2. A traceable review packet could expose reconciliation differences before a qualified preparer makes tax judgments. Separating source arithmetic from classification questions would help reviewers correct records without treating the workpaper as a completed return.

Why an agent / simpler alternative

Useful judgment

Match transactions across documents and identify inconsistent entity or period attribution.

Simpler alternative

Use an established bookkeeping export when reconciled accounts already cover the required period.

Unsuitable when

Tax treatment or filing decisions must be made without an authorized qualified reviewer.

Proposed inputs

  1. Name

    Source-record pack

    Owner

    Business owner

    Minimum scope

Relevant statements and documents with sensitive identifiers redacted where possible

    Quality check

    Confirm period, entity and completeness.

  2. Name

    Entity and account map

    Owner

    Finance owner

    Minimum scope

Known entity history, account relationships and approved categories

    Quality check

Mark uncertain classifications for preparer review.

Access and setup — proposed or unknown

Proposed minimum
  1. Read-only copies and an isolated workpaper draft; no filing-system access.

Compatibility unknowns
  1. Unknown: exact runtime, document extraction and accounting/tax-tool compatibility.

External actions requiring approval
  1. Sharing financial records, changing books or submitting information to a tax authority.

Expected deliverable and review checks

Proposed artifact

Source-indexed summary and profit-and-loss workpaper with reconciliation exceptions.

Critical checks
  1. Totals can be traced back to source rows.

  2. Transfers, duplicates and uncertain classifications remain visible rather than silently resolved.

Missing output evidence

No new reconciliation test, tax determination or filing validation occurs here.

Failure signals and proposed responses

  1. Signal

One transaction appears in a statement and a duplicate export.

    Why it matters

The workpaper may overstate a category.

    Proposed response

Retain both references but count only a verified underlying transaction.

  2. Signal

    Records cross an entity-change date.

    Why it matters

Amounts may be assigned to the wrong reporting scope.

    Proposed response

Flag the boundary and request finance-owner confirmation.

Effort and cost — unknown

Setup work
  1. Index source documents and establish reporting boundaries.

Ongoing review
  1. Resolve exceptions and have the preparer validate classifications.

Unknowns
  1. Unknown: extraction quality, professional review cost and applicable filing requirements.

First check — proposed, unexecuted

Status

proposed_unexecuted

Synthetic fixture

Invented ledger snippets contain a duplicated expense and an unclassified transfer across two accounts.

Acceptance checks
  1. Duplicate evidence is linked without double-counting.

  2. The transfer remains unresolved pending classification.

Stop conditions
  1. A tax rule, sensitive identifier or filing action is required.

Limits

  1. Editorial record-preparation aid; source-reported corrections and manual intervention remain referenced.
