Build checked cartographic maps from spatial layers

Source-backed example. Practical decision guidance is proposed and untested; this is not a full implementation guide.

The problem

Spatial layers need coherent projection, symbology and layout choices before they become a readable map someone can assess.

Agent job

Validate spatial layers, choose a CRS and symbology, add labels and cartographic elements, export the map and check the output.

Expected output

An exported cartographic map for human visual review.

Why use this

  1. A map can be visually polished while misrepresenting scale, coverage or the meaning of colour classes. Projection mismatch and clipped labels may not prevent export, so a file-exists check is much weaker than a usable cartographic result.

  2. This job could turn spatial layers into a reviewable layout with explicit design and data assumptions. A GIS reviewer could compare the exported map with the intended message and identify where symbols or missing metadata create a misleading impression.

Why an agent / simpler alternative

Useful judgment

Reconcile layer metadata and choose candidate layout treatments for informed visual review.

Simpler alternative

Use an established map template when layers and purpose are unchanged.

Unsuitable when

The map would support navigation, legal boundaries or safety decisions without validated data.

Proposed inputs

  1. Name

    Spatial layer package

    Owner

    GIS owner

    Minimum scope

Authorized vector/raster copies, CRS metadata and attribution requirements

    Quality check

Check geometry validity, units, coverage and missing-data values.

  2. Name

    Map brief

    Owner

    Map owner

    Minimum scope

Audience, geographic extent, output size and intended comparison

    Quality check

Define what the colours and labels must communicate.

Access and setup — proposed or unknown

Proposed minimum
  1. Work on copied layers and export to a separate review path with preserved project settings.

Compatibility unknowns
  1. Unknown: QGIS versions, font availability, render behaviour and export compatibility.

External actions requiring approval
  1. Installing tools, overwriting source layers or publishing sensitive location data.

Expected deliverable and review checks

Proposed artifact

Map-layout candidate with layer inventory, symbol definitions, attribution and visual QA checklist.

Critical checks
  1. Legend, scale and north indication agree with the actual map context.

  2. Missing data is visually distinct from meaningful low or zero values.

Missing output evidence

No new run or output inspection in this editorial layer; see linked source-specific limits.

Failure signals and proposed responses

  1. Signal

A raster’s missing-value code is included in the colour range.

    Why it matters

The legend and apparent distribution may become misleading.

    Proposed response

Mask missing data explicitly and recompute classes under the reviewer’s chosen method.

  2. Signal

Labels look readable in the editor but collide at export size.

    Why it matters

The delivered map may obscure important features.

    Proposed response

Review at final dimensions and adjust priorities, placement or scale before acceptance.

Effort and cost — unknown

Setup work
  1. Validate metadata and agree symbology and layout standards.

Ongoing review
  1. Inspect each final export and update attribution as layers change.

Unknowns
  1. Unknown: data cleanup, render resources and cartographic review effort.

First check — proposed, unexecuted

Status

proposed_unexecuted

Synthetic fixture

Synthetic layers include a missing-value raster code, mismatched CRS metadata and dense labels at a small output size.

Acceptance checks
  1. All three issues receive distinct checks.

  2. A successful export alone does not satisfy the proposed acceptance criteria.

Stop conditions
  1. CRS, source rights or consequential spatial accuracy remains unresolved.

Limits

  1. Cartographic clarity cannot compensate for unreliable underlying data; visual and technical review are both necessary.

What the source supports
Load and validate vector/raster layers, choose a suitable CRS and data-appropriate symbology, add readable labels and linked cartographic elements, compose a layout, export the map and check success and file existence.
Source outcome limits
Recipe only. No rendered map inspected. Version-sensitive code, layout dimensions, labels, scale, attribution and source-data quality require human review.
Evidence attribution caveat
This community recipe describes a procedure; it does not prove successful execution or independently reproduced results.
Source approval description
Source requires validation before delivery but specifies no human approval or overwrite boundary.

Proposed Canadian adaptation
Proposed: create maps using authorized Canadian open data, appropriate local projections and bilingual labels, with source dates and licensing displayed; review sensitive-location disclosure.
Recommended approval boundaries
Confirm input-data license, map purpose, projection, extent and output location; require human visual review of labels, legend, scale and attribution before publication or decision use.
