Find application defects and draft a reviewed fix

Source-backed example. Practical decision guidance is proposed and untested; this is not a full implementation guide.

The problem

A signup problem that appears only at certain screen sizes can escape routine checks and leave developers without a concrete fix candidate.

Attributed source action

Click-testing found a screen-size-specific signup defect and produced a fix PR.

Proposed review output

Proposed review artifact: Reproduction checklist and bounded fix-review proposal with regression scenarios.

Where this framing comes from

Why use this

  1. A signup defect limited to a particular display size can escape checks on a developer’s usual screen. A proposed fix may hide the visible symptom while changing keyboard access, validation or behavior at other sizes.

  2. A reproducibility and review plan could describe the affected state precisely and define what a fix must preserve. The engineering team would still need actual testing and code review before treating any pull request as a correction.

Why an agent / simpler alternative

Useful judgment

Turn UI observations into a focused defect hypothesis and identify related regression checks.

Simpler alternative

Use a known responsive-design test case when the failure is already isolated.

Unsuitable when

Testing requires production account actions or access beyond the approved environment.

Proposed inputs

  1. Name

    Authorized application scope

    Owner

    Product owner

    Minimum scope

Test environment, signup path and allowed nonproduction actions

    Quality check

Confirm no real customer account or payment is needed.

  2. Name

    Defect context

    Owner

    Developer

    Minimum scope

Reported viewport, browser state and expected behavior

    Quality check

Record exact steps and distinguish observation from suspected cause.

Access and setup — proposed or unknown

Proposed minimum
  1. Supplied screenshots/reproduction notes and an offline test matrix before browser or code work.

Compatibility unknowns
  1. Unknown: exact runtime, browser availability, application access and repository/test setup.

External actions requiring approval
  1. Creating test accounts, changing code, posting PRs or deploying fixes.

Expected deliverable and review checks

Proposed artifact

Reproduction checklist and bounded fix-review proposal with regression scenarios.

Critical checks
  1. The defect description identifies viewport, state and expected versus observed behavior.

  2. A fix proposal does not imply that the original problem or regressions have been tested.

Missing output evidence

No new workflow run or output inspection was performed for this overlay.

Failure signals and proposed responses

  1. Signal

The proposed CSS hides validation text to remove overlap.

    Why it matters

Visual improvement could conceal actionable form errors.

    Proposed response

Require validation and accessibility review before considering the approach.

  2. Signal

The issue depends on zoom or a prior form state absent from the report.

    Why it matters

The defect may be difficult to reproduce reliably.

    Proposed response

Add the missing state to the reproduction questions.

Effort and cost — unknown

Setup work
  1. Define safe test scope and a reproducible viewport/state matrix.

Ongoing review
  1. Inspect the proposed diff and run authorized regression checks separately.

Unknowns
  1. Unknown: defect cause, repair effort and cross-browser impact.

First check — proposed, unexecuted

Status

proposed_unexecuted

Synthetic fixture

An invented bug report gives screen width but omits zoom and validation state; a proposed fix hides error text.

Acceptance checks
  1. Missing reproduction details are flagged.

  2. The symptom-only fix is not labelled validated.

Stop conditions
  1. Live signup, code changes or deployment authority is required.

Limits

  1. Editorial defect plan; no reproduction, fix effectiveness or engineering validation is established.
